Compare Windows to Red Hat

Someone recently ripped into the Windows vs. Red Hat comparison hosted at microsoft.com. One of the things mentioned was that the cost comparison isn't even close to being valid.

But. Red Hat *IS* expensive to buy, at least upfront. Is the comparison valid or not?
