With money tight, is it Linux's time to shine?

As Linux becomes easier to configure and maintain, open-source in the SoHo environment will become commonplace (as it is in data centers).

As I'm a die-hard Mac fan, you may wonder how I feel about Linux. Well, my Lilliputian Asus kneetop came with Linux pre-installed and - surprise - I actually like it

Netbooks are becoming a big problem for Microsoft's Windows business. ASUS & Acer, which together account for 90% of the netbook market, are using the rival Linux software on about 30% of their low-cost notebooks.

"It's a real threat to Microsoft,'' said Dickie Chang, an analyst at research firm IDC in Taipei.

In November, Asus will ship a $400 Windows-based "nettop" that includes an integrated touchscreen and Linux-based "Express Gate" quick boot technology.

The "Eee Top" reportedly has a 15-inch display, 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor, 1GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, and a gigabit Ethernet port.
