We can speed up the booting process by installing Ubuntu to a bootable USB flash drive instead.

Quickstart is a tiny script that allows you to backup your *whole* Ubuntu installation. Backup files can be stored on any medium, and restoration is as simple as the backup - Iv tried it, and it works a treat.

You *can* do the same from the command line, but for newcomers to Linux Quickstart ticks all the boxes.
