Why desktop Linux is its own worst enemy

With Microsoft getting so much flak over Vista’s issues, you’d think Linux would be getting some headway in the consumer desktop arena.

Unfortunately, the only really benefiting from Vista’s bad PR is likely Apple. Why hasn’t Linux made enough of a significant mark on desktops?

It can be downloaded gratis, has far less security issues and ..

My first opinion during all of this hooplah was that why should I care about Red Hat and SUSE Linux not having a consumer desktop line?

It doesn't detract from the Linux desktop as a whole, plus let's face it: Ubuntu is kicking butt and taking names.

Except I think I may have been wrong.

Basically, Novell and Red Hat won’t be trying to get consumer desktop market share, focusing instead only on the ‘enterprise’ desktop market; Fedora and openSUSE thus appear to be relegated to ‘hobbyist OS’ level.

Ubuntu is now THE distro of choice for home use, with no major competitors, but I think we’ve known that for some time.
