Ubuntu launches Free Culture Showcase

The Ubuntu community has launched its second Free Culture Showcase, a contest that gives artists the opportunity to have their creative works included in the next major version of the Ubuntu Linux distribution.

All submissions must be licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike license.


 

FSF Releases New Version of GNU Free Documentation License

FSF.org: "The Free Software Foundation (FSF) today announced the release of version 1.3 of the GNU Free Documentation License (FDL).

This version of the license allows public wikis to relicense their FDL-covered materials under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike (CC-BY-SA) 3.0 license."

Free Documentation License 1.3

The Free Software Foundation has announced the release of version 1.3 of the GNU Free Documentation License.

The big change would appear to be a clause allowing FDL-licensed text to be relicensed to the Creative Commons attribution-sharealike license.

"This new permission has been added at the request of the Wikimedia Foundation, which oversees the Wikipedia project.

The same terms are available to any public wiki that uses materials available under the new license.


 

Why is The Bizarre Cathedral licence "non-free"?

For 26 weeks I’ve been producing the Bizarre Cathedral strips for Free Software Magazine. Every is released under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non-commerical-Share Alike (BY-NC-SA) licence.

Recently I’ve received a few pieces of mail saying this is a “non-free” licence and questioning my use of it here.

I’m not going to change it. Here is why.

OpenLab will encourage students to develop their own projects based on Openmoko software and hardware, says Openmoko.

Working with National Tsing Hua University, Openmoko has developed a curriculum for OpenLab that is being released under a creative commons share-alike license.
