The Philosophy and Features of Ubuntu 8.10

Last week, I had the pleasure of getting some unique insight into the Ubuntu 8.10 release ("Intrepid Ibex") from Canonical's marketing manager, Gerry Carr.

The finalized server and desktop editions of the 8.10 release will be available for download October 30th, and host a variety of new tools and features.


 

Differing trends for Linux on netbooks

There appear to be some opposing trends involving Linux on Netbooks. PC World's article Netbooks Will Boost Adoption of Linux, Says Novell CTO notes: "A surge in demand for netbooks is helping drive business for Linux, as the devices are designed to be low-cost with smaller storage, according to Novell's chief technology and strategy officer for Linux.

Ubuntu makes playing Proprietary Formats easier and legal

In a Canonical blog, Gerry Carr , Canonical’s marketing manager, explained how Canonical is making this possible.

Carr wrote, “For the first time we are making codecs for media playback and a DVD player, from our partners at Fluendo and Cyberlink, available through the Ubuntu store.”

Canonical is working on two mobile Linux projects. One called Ubuntu Netbook Remix, the other called Ubuntu for Mobile Internet Devices.

geekinchief points to a just-posted interview at Laptop Magazine "with Canonical's market manager, Gerry Carr, where he talks about Ubuntu Netbook Remix.

Some interesting details: Canonical does not plan to make the Netbook remix available for download or sale.

It will only come pre-installed on new systems. It will boot in 5-10 seconds."
