Last week, I had the pleasure of getting some unique insight into the Ubuntu 8.10 release ("Intrepid Ibex") from Canonical's marketing manager, Gerry Carr.

The finalized server and desktop editions of the 8.10 release will be available for download October 30th, and host a variety of new tools and features.

There appear to be some opposing trends involving Linux on Netbooks. In a Canonical blog, Gerry Carr , Canonical’s marketing manager, explained how Canonical is making this possible.

Carr wrote, “For the first time we are making codecs for media playback and a DVD player, from our partners at Fluendo and Cyberlink, available through the Ubuntu store.”

Canonical is working on two mobile Linux projects. One called Ubuntu Netbook Remix, the other called Ubuntu for Mobile Internet Devices.

So what's the difference between the two? Glad you asked. Gerry Carr, marketing manager for Canonical, described each platform during a meeting at OSCON.

Some interesting details: Canonical does not plan to make the Netbook remix available for download or sale.

It will only come pre-installed on new systems. It will boot in 5-10 seconds."

We’re of course looking to get a bunch of pre-installed partners, we’re working to make that happen, but that’s something for them to announce, not us.

We’ll see it more with smaller vendors, some of which are shipping now.
