Second Life Recognizes Open Source Community With 2008 Awards

Linux.com: "Linden Lab, creator of the online virtual space Second Life, recognized the accomplishments of outstanding individuals in its open source community this week at its Linden Lab Innovation Awards.

Seven winners were announced at a "mixed reality" ceremony held both at a convention center in Florida and simultaneously within the Second Life system."

Second Life vendor Linden Lab has been dabbling in open source for quite a while: their client code is available, and they've persistently talked about making the server open source as well.

But now the company is facing a potential upheaval to its business model, as alternative compatible virtual worlds are popping up all over the place
