Ext4 Advances As Interim Step To Btrfs

Slashdot: Linux  Sun, 10/19/2008 - 22:57

Heise.de's Kernel Log has a look at the ext4 filesystem as Linus Torvalds has integrated a large collection of patches for it into the kernel main branch.

"This signals that with the next kernel version 2.6.28, the successor to ext3 will finally leave behind its 'hot' development phase." The article notes that ext4 developer Theodore Ts'o (tytso) is in favor of ultimately moving Linux to a modern, "next-generation" file system.

Farewell To The Linux 2.6 Kernel? Could be called 2009.0.0!

Digg Linux/Unix upcoming  Fri, 10/17/2008 - 15:33

Version 2.6 of the Linux kernel was released in late 2003 and since then the developers have stuck with the 2.6.x.y version numbering.

It's been five years with the stable Linux 2.6 kernel, but a proposal has been made on the Linux kernel mailing list to change this scheme.

64-bit Application Thread Creation Performance

KernelTrap - Kernel news  Mon, 08/18/2008 - 14:51

A recent discussion on the Linux Kernel mailing list noted that threaded 64-bit applications suffer a drastic slowdown in pthread_create performance when stack utilization goes above 4GB.

Ingo Molnar offered an explanation of the problem, "unfortunately MAP_32BIT use in 64-bit apps for stacks was apparently created without foresight about what would happen in the MM when thread stacks exhaust 4GB.

Reiser4 Update

KernelTrap - Kernel news  Wed, 08/06/2008 - 12:00

"I have had to apply the reiser4 patches from -mm kernels to vanilla based patchset for over a year now.

Reiser4 works fine, what will it take to get it included in vanilla?" began a brief thread on the Linux Kernel mailing list.

Topix - Linux  Sun, 08/03/2008 - 00:08

Open Source infighting over the GPLv3 just turned nastier - in a post on the Linux kernel mailing list , Linus Torvalds effectively called the authors of the GPLv3 'hypocritical morons' .

Digg Linux/Unix upcoming  Thu, 07/17/2008 - 15:27

Everthing starts with a debate on the linux-kernel mailing list about a suitable logo/mascot for Linux. Many many different ideas including noble beasts such as Sharks or Eagles and inspirations from other operating system logos suggested before Linus Torvalds (the father of Linux) said: “I am rather fond of Penguins”.

Security Bugs and Full Disclosure

KernelTrap - Kernel news  Wed, 07/16/2008 - 07:57

In an announcement for the 2.6.25.10 stable kernel, Greg KH noted, "it contains a number of assorted bugfixes all over the tree.

And once again, any users of the 2.6.25 kernel series are STRONGLY encouraged to upgrade to this release." The emphasis on the word strongly led to a lengthy discussion about how security fixes are handled in the Linux Kernel.
