Linux has no shortage of audio and video players, but if you want to devote you whole system to multimedia use, you need the Xbox Media Center (XBMC).

Although initially designed for the Xbox gaming console, XBMC has been ported to other platforms. The Linux port of XBMC that I use is quite usable, especially for video playback.

Boxee port of XBMC & social media player goes Ubuntu Linux!

Boxee released their Ubuntu Linux port for 7.10 and 8.04 (Gutsy Gibbon and Hardy Heron) versions today. Sign up for their alpha at boxee.tv or ask your friends who have been using it on OS-X to add your email to their friends list within the boxee website.

It's an all-format media player with social ties. That means it tweets, friendfeeds, etc!


 

HP open-sources the Tru64 filesystem

HP has released the Tru64 filesystem (under the name AdvFS) under the GPLv2 license; the code can be obtained from the AdvFS site.

AdvFS claims a number of worthwhile features, including multi-device storage pools, online resizing, snapshotting, deleted file recovery, and more.

Note that there does not appear to be a working Linux port at this point, but the code is available and that is a good start.

Linux gains action RPG

Linux Game Publishing has announced a Linux port of "Sacred Gold," an action role-playing game first published for Windows three years ago.

The U.K.-based game publisher plans to ship the title in August of this year, priced at 27 GBP (~ $50).
