Is Gentoo ready to be as awsome as it was before?

Developers are hopeful that the 2008.0 release will put Gentoo back on track as the project aims to regain momentum and mindshare with open source developers.

The latest release of Gentoo comes on the heals of a hot release season for Linux. Red Hat, Ubuntu and openSUSE are all planning to release updates.


 

Rival mobile Linux consortiums smoke peace pipe, consolidate

The Linux Phone Standards Forum has joined forces with the Linux Mobile Foundation. This consolidation will give the group more leverage as it competes for mindshare against the new Symbian Foundation and Open Handset Alliance.


 

On the success of Ubuntu

I'm writing this as I'm wrapping up the Gentoo installation on my thinkpad that replaced the horrible mess that was Ubuntu 8.04 ("Hardy") and it kinda got me thinking about how it came to be that Ubuntu dominated the mindshare.


 

Subversion considers its future

Ben Collins-Sussman has posted an interesting note on the future of Subversion and centralized version control.

"I've chatted with other developers, and we've all come to some similar private conclusions about Subversion's future.

First, we think that this will probably be the 'final' centralized system that gets written in the open source world - it represents the end-of-the-line for this model of code collaboration.
