Yes, you can do it manually from the command line, assuming you have network tools for linux installed. No need for Network Manager hogging up precious resources.

The KDE Network Manager applet currently in Kubuntu Intrepid 8.10 is deeply flawed compared with the version released with Hardy 8.04.

If it isn't fixed soon, Kubuntu 8.10 (with KDE) will have horrible wireless network support, while Ubuntu (with GNOME) will work well.


 

HSPA Solid on Intrepid Beta

I was pleasantly surprised to find that Extel’s HSPA offering works out-of-the-box with the current Ubuntu Intrepid beta.

The CLI fiddling of the past is no longer needed - Network Manager takes care of everything.


 

Ubuntu 8.10 Alpha 5

Alpha 5 of the new Ubuntu 8.10 is out…It comes with X.Org 7.4, Linux kerne 2.6.27 og Network Manager 0.7, but note it is a Alpha so is not even a beta yet… ;)

A new release of wicd has been released few days ago, i just tried on ubuntu hardy and i think that it's better than network manager 0.7 yet, although this one is very improved...
