A key challenge faced by any open source project is getting mindshare. It’s a truism that if decision makers don’t know about a product, they won’t consider it.

If they don’t consider it, they’ll select other approaches. There are too many people shouting out their own Xen messages.


 

Canonical Abusing Trademark Ownership

Canonical (the company behind arguably the most popular Linux distribution, Ubuntu) have stopped an open-source project on grounds of Trademark violations, despite the name not conflicting with their Trademark Policy.

Intel and Microsoft are monopolies that used brute force to delay the OLPC non-profit open-source project from starting the cheap laptop revolution, taking away the profit margins from a multi-hundred-billion dollar laptop and PC industry.

Bruce Perens looks at Microsoft's sponsorship of Apache.

"For a decade, Microsoft was open source's worst enemy, combating it at every turn. But last week Microsoft joined the Apache open source project as a platinum sponsor, promising to put $100,000 per year into a project that beats its own IIS (Internet Information Services) in the market.

Microsoft also made some of their patents available for use in GPL software like Linux without a royalty.
