SimplyMEPIS: The best desktop Linux you haven't tried

Digg Linux/Unix upcoming  Fri, 11/21/2008 - 15:23

Nowadays, everyone uses Ubuntu, most people have used Fedora, and many folks have tried openSUSE. SimplyMEPIS ... not so many.

That's a shame, because this relatively obscure Debian-based desktop distribution from Morgantown, WV. is an outstanding desktop operating system.

FreeBSD as a desktop OS

Digg Linux/Unix upcoming  Sat, 11/15/2008 - 08:47

Saying that FreeBSD is an excellent choice to build a server upon would be stating the blatantly obvious. Sadly though, FreeBSD as a desktop OS is a much less common sight.

This is a shame, particularly for developers who could have a desktop that closely mimics the configuration and behavior of FreeBSD servers in a remote datacenter.

The Robot: A Body, Sensors and Good Progress

Linux Today  Sat, 11/15/2008 - 00:02

Adam's Tech Talk: "The body is ever so slightly lop sided by a few mm here and there which is a shame however from a short distance you wouldn't notice, it stands up straight and weight distribution is equal throughout the base plate so I’m happy with it."

Are vendors vital to open source?

Digg Linux/Unix upcoming  Fri, 10/24/2008 - 13:59

Open source embraces these other motivations. The motivation to create, the motivation to share, these are important in open source.

In Linux alone they’re worth $10.8 billion. While open source exists in the market, it also exists outside it, and above it, and around it.

There is no reason to feel shame in this. I think it’s kinda cool.

Sun Microsystems Has a Fan in Memphis

Topix - Linux  Mon, 08/25/2008 - 09:50

The short take on the situation at Sun Microsystems is that it's a shame. It still has plenty of bright people, and it's been a wellspring of innovative ideas over the years.

Very useful for testing!

Seagate Kills Linux Support

Digg Linux/Unix upcoming  Fri, 04/18/2008 - 01:33

I never thought I would see the day when a hard drive manufacturer would go from indifferent to outright stupid all with one drive release.

Apparently, it has happened. It seems that Seagate has opted to forgo compatibility for anyone other than Linux users and that’s a real shame, as I have always been a satisfied Seagate user.
