Andy Updegrove has the news that South Africa has filed an official appeal, protesting the approval of OOXML, and the action means that OOXML is now in limbo until the appeal is decided.

I wonder if this is why Microsoft suddenly decided to support ODF, to avoid being shut out completely pending the appeal.
