Ubuntu 8.04 with Compiz runs on an Acer Aspire One netbook (8GB storage, 1GB RAM, Intel Atom processor). Notice Photoshop running in a window through Wine, the Scale effect on Compiz that works like Expose on the Mac, and the Google Gadgets (like Mac widgets or Vista gadgets) on the desktop.

KDE 4 has a completely new approach to the deskop: there are no traditional desktop icons, but the whole desktop is build of Plasmoids.

In fact, even taskbar and desktop icons are Plasmoids. There are also mini-applications, Widgets, which are similar to Windows Vista’s Gadgets.

All of these Plasmoids are easily resizable and customizable.

Zack Rusin of KDE has said KDE4 will have full support for widgets from OS X's Dashboard .

The latest series of the K Desktop Environment now utilizes Plasma, a ne| desktop and panel user interface tool that aims for a more functional, user-friendly, and sleek KDE desktop.

Plasma also supports Dashboard-like widgets called plasmoids.
