Change in GFDL now allows Wikipedia to become CC compatible

Thanks to Richard Stallman, everyone at the Free Software Foundation, The Wikimedia Foundation, Creative Commons and the various communities who have worked so hard to get this to happen.


 

Free Documentation License 1.3

The Free Software Foundation has announced the release of version 1.3 of the GNU Free Documentation License.

The big change would appear to be a clause allowing FDL-licensed text to be relicensed to the Creative Commons attribution-sharealike license.

"This new permission has been added at the request of the Wikimedia Foundation, which oversees the Wikipedia project.

The same terms are available to any public wiki that uses materials available under the new license.


 

Wikipedia adopts Ubuntu for its server infrastructure

The Wikimedia Foundation, the organization behind the hugely successful Wikipedia project, is migrating all of its server infrastructure to the Ubuntu Linux distribution.


 

Wikipedia standardizes servers on Ubuntu

The operator of the popular Wikipedia website has reportedly standardized its 400 servers on Ubuntu. San Francisco based Wikimedia Foundation, which employs five geographically distributed IT staff, and serves two million pages daily, says the move will simplify server maintenance, according to a report.


 

Linux.conf.au announces keynotes for 2009

The 2009 edition of linux.conf.au has announced three keynote speakers for the conference. It will be held January 19-24, 2009 in Hobart, Tasmania.
