You can now get a live CD of Sugar, the environment for the One Laptop Per Child's XO system. Or you could use it as your GUI environment in Ubuntu or Debian, or even (dare I say it) use it in Windows!

Following Thurday's news about OLPC teaming up with Microsoft, Walter Bender - former president of software at OLPC - announced the launch of SugarLabs.

Consistent with the OLPC mission to provide opportunities for learning, SugarLabs will focus on providing an open ecosystem that enhances learning on the XO as well as other hardware platforms.


 

Windows XP for the XO?

Nicholas Negroponte said the open-source Sugar software, developed expressly for the XO, could run on top of XP.

Negroponte cited weaknesses in the XO's current operating system - as well as the Linux community itself (for being too "fundamentalist")

One Laptop Per Child News: "Negroponte says that a Windows operating system is in the process of being fine-tuned on the XO as we speak.

“Microsoft and OLPC are in discussion on how to release it, as well as how to announce,” he said. Negroponte added that the Windows operating system should be available on the XO in less than 60 days."

Laptop Magazine is reporting two interesting things about the OLPC.

The first is that contrary to other reports, Nicholas Negroponte is not looking to "replace" himself, but is looking for a CEO for the company.

The second is that Windows XP will be available for the XO soon. "'Microsoft and OLPC are in discussion on how to release it, as well as how to announce,' he said.
