Asus of Taiwan has shown the way by selling a million of its Eee range of PCs starting at £190. They are packed with features for work or play and can be made cheaply thanks to free open-source software, including a Linux operating system.

Industry giants including Hewlett-Packard, Acer and Dell are now piling in too
