KRunner in 4.0.x was not meant to be a production interface. Just under the wire for the feature freeze, KDE team managed to get a new user interface that they've been working on for KDE 4.1.

It provides a much nicer experience including more speed, solid stability, better usability, more configurability and fun eye candy.
