Generating Truly Random Passwords using Device Driver Noise

/dev/urandom pulls "noise" from device drivers to create random data. By using a small script you can use this to create truly random passwords to any length you want. Script and instructions included. Note this was tested on Ubuntu Linux it should work in other distros but no promises.

The Pain-Free Guide to Switching Linux Distros

TechRadar: "Switching to a different distro means formatting at least part of your hard disk and starting again with configuration of your system. It could also wipe out all of your personal files, depending on how your disk is partitioned."

Custom Gnome start menu icon

I thought I’d post a little tutorial on how to change the start menu icon in Gnome. I’ve always wondered how to do it, but for some reason I wasn’t able to figure out how until recently. It turned out to be really simple. I’m using Ubuntu in this example, but it should work almost the same for other distros.

A Few Ways To Gauge Possible Memory Bottlenecks In SUSE Linux

The Linux and Unix Menagerie: "Today we're going to take a look at a few (well, maybe more than a few) ways to check your Linux box to find out if the reason it's beginning to perform poorly is related to memory or memory-management issues. For today's examples, in particular, we’ll be using SUSE Linux 9.x, but most of these examples translate just as easily to RedHat, Ubuntu and other widely-used distros, with some minor modifications."

Installing and Configuring Solr on Debian GNU/Linux

After installing and playing around with Solr on my Gentoo box, I had to deploy the same stuff on Debian Lenny/sid. The difference between the two distros wasn't huge but it worth mentioning that Tomcat 6 didn't hit Debian's experimental until the moment I am typing this.
