Ubuntu installation problems

My Ubuntu Linux project has not been going well. I spent about five or six hours on it yesterday (while simultaneously doing other things) but I was not able to get it up and running on my ThinkPad i Series type 2611-472.

IBM/Lenovo Active Protection System under Linux

With the new series of ThinkPads IBM introduced the Active Protection System (APS) in 2003. The APS is a protection system for the ThinkPad's internal harddrive. A sensor inside the ThinkPad recognizes when the notebook is accelerated. A software applet then is triggered to park the harddisk.

Unfortunately both SUSE and Fedora had issues with my hardware. Debian however had only a minor issue with my CD-drive but the installation went without a hitch !

I'm writing this as I'm wrapping up the Gentoo installation on my thinkpad that replaced the horrible mess that was Ubuntu 8.04 ("Hardy") and it kinda got me thinking about how it came to be that Ubuntu dominated the mindshare.
